Shop smoke alarms, heat alarms and carbon monoxide detectors at RS Electrical Supplies. Fire and CO detection is a legal requirement in all domestic properties in England and Wales under the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (Amendment) Regulations 2022 — requiring at least one smoke alarm on every storey used as living accommodation, and a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance. Detector Types Available

  • Optical smoke alarms — detect slow-burning, smouldering fires; recommended for living rooms, bedrooms and hallways
  • Ionisation smoke alarms — detect fast-flaming fires; suitable for hallways and landings
  • Heat alarms — activate on temperature rise rather than smoke; the correct choice for kitchens where cooking fumes would cause nuisance alarms from smoke detectors
  • Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms — detect CO gas from faulty boilers, gas fires and other combustion appliances; required in any room with a fixed combustion appliance under the 2022 Regulations
  • Combination alarms — smoke and CO detection in a single unit for simplified installation

Mains vs Battery-Powered

  • Mains-powered (230V) — hardwired with battery backup; required in new builds and recommended for full compliance in existing properties; can be interlinked so all alarms sound together
  • Battery-powered — easier to retrofit in existing properties; sealed long-life lithium battery models available with 10-year service life
